We hope that everyone has enjoyed their summer! Here in Massachusetts it felt like it went pretty quick, as it always does. Few hot days and even more days of rain, but as we approach September and the fall season things have been progressing here at Knox's Artillery!
While we haven't posted since the Spring we have been working on several projects. First and foremost is that the research continues. We have been getting documents from the Massachusetts Historical Society in Boston and most recently received some returns and equipment receipts from then Captain William Perkins who commanded a sister company of artillery under Colonel Knox.
We also completed our first shelter, which as you can see in the photo below is very simply constructed of unbleached linen. Spent about 20 hours hand stitching the seams, and gromet holes together. It is supported by some locally cut tree branches and tied up with hemp rope and hand forged iron stakes. This is ideally how our camp will look for sleeping arrangements, for folks wanting more privacy they will have the option of having a tent in the army tent rows. This one could probably sleep three to four people snugly, we will construct another "wagon cover" such as this or perhaps add to this one and make it larger. You can also see the musket rack go its first workout the Old Sturbridge Village event "Redcoats and Rebels" This likewise is constructed simply from a strait branch and two smaller branches with natural "Y's" in them.
And now the best for last! Just got some photos sent to us of our gun carriage being constructed. Steve and his very talented team at Trail Rock Ordnance are hard at work completing our first cannon. As you can see in the photos the carriage has been assembled, they are waiting on delivery of the wheels and tube back from being bronzed. They are optimistic we will be on schedule for completion in Late September/Early October! Very exciting!
